CHALLENGE
We had the great opportunity to work on several major network television series doing digital design and implementation for props they would use on the sets for shows they were working on in Charleston, SC and Atlanta, GA.
The challenge was to provide functioning digital assets that the actors could use as props on devices such as cell phones, iPads and laptop computers when filming scenes for these shows. A key requirement was to build out apps that would follow a specific function and process that flowed with the story line of the script. Also, these were to run as web apps on offline hardware where the use of the internet would interfere with the production process.
SOLUTION
To meet the production needs, we closely analyzed the screenplays and scene requirements for each episode to ensure the apps looked and functioned authentically on screen.
We utilized HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript to develop interactive design files, effectively turning them into functional digital props. By running these files directly on offline devices, we successfully simulated the experience of a working smartphone or laptop—without the need for an actual internet connection. This approach ensured seamless on-camera performance while maintaining production efficiency.
RESULTS
For Reckless, Microsoft Corporation had an exclusive contract requiring the use of Windows 10 imagery, giving us the opportunity to emulate their latest operating system in the form of a virtual search engine.
